Similar conclusions can be drawn from other recent sport mega-events. Consider the case of Euro 2008 in Switzerland and Austria, which saw the first urban-centred deployment of military drones above three of the four Swiss host cities of the event. The drones were supplied by the Swiss Air Force’s industry partner RUAG Aerospace, and operated by the army’s Drone Squadron 7 in collaboration with civilian personnel at the military airbase in Emmen (Schweizer Armee, 2008). Furthermore, 15,000 military personnel were deployed for Euro 2008 in Switzerland – from the air force, infantry, military security, sanitary services and communication services – making the event the biggest military deployment in Switzerland since the Second World War (Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft, 2007). In Austria, 3,000 military personnel assisted the event (Österreichisches Bundesheer, 2008), which also saw the policing debut of Austria’s new Eurofighter Typhoon, an aircraft developed by the European Consortium Eurofighter GmbH in the UK, Italy, Germany and Spain (Hoyle, 2008). Thus the field of sport mega-event security indeed testifies powerfully to the development of novel inter-organizational relationships that blur the traditional distinctions between civilian–military, war–law enforcement and internal–external security. In the case study at the end of this chapter, a more distinct and empirically informed spatial focus will be added to this discussion.
